I recently had the pleasure of taking part in a fantastic trip organized by the amazing team at Newcastle Gateshead Initiative. As someone who has seen many event destinations, I can confidently say that Newcastle upon Tyne exceeded my expectations. Whether it's for a corporate gathering, an NGO retreat, or a high-profile conference, this vibrant city has everything you need to make your event truly unforgettable. Let me take you through my experience and explain why Newcastle should be on your radar.

A City Where History Meets Innovation

Newcastle is one of those cities where you can literally feel the past and the present working together. I found myself wandering through the medieval Blackfriars restaurant, which is set inside a 13th-century friary (yes, it’s that cool), and then just a short time later, I was at The Glasshouse International Centre for Music—a modern, world-class venue with a focus on empowering communities through music. The contrast between old and new is something Newcastle really nails.

But that’s not all. One of my personal favorites was The Biscuit Factory, a contemporary art gallery turned event space. This place has something special about it—lush greenery, creative energy, and plenty of room for events like workshops, networking sessions, and even brand activations. If you're after a venue with a ‘wow factor,’ this one should be at the top of your list.

Top-Tier Venues for Every Occasion

No matter what type of event you're planning, Newcastle has a venue to match your needs. Here are a few of my top picks:

  • Frederick Douglass Centre (Newcastle University) – This state-of-the-art academic hub is perfect for tech conferences and hybrid events. Walking through the space, you can sense the energy of the university, making it an inspiring setting for thought leaders and innovators. It’s also an ideal spot for NGOs, offering a dynamic environment for collaboration.

  • The Biscuit Factory – This creative, art-inspired venue brings something special to any event. Whether you’re hosting a workshop or a team-building session, the atmosphere here is guaranteed to spark creativity.

  • The Glasshouse – More than just a venue, The Glasshouse is a charity focused on music education, making it a meaningful choice for socially-conscious events. The beautiful views and mission-driven ethos offer a unique twist to any corporate gathering.

  • Newcastle Civic Centre – For formal receptions or high-level gatherings, the Civic Centre offers grandeur and history. This iconic building provides a sophisticated setting that impresses from start to finish.

And if you’re looking to add a fun and delicious twist to your event, don’t miss the Grainger Market Food Tour. This bustling market, dating back to 1835, brings together flavors from around the world, providing an excellent way for attendees to network and bond over great food.

Seamless & Sustainable Logistics

One of Newcastle's greatest advantages is how walkable the city is. Everything you need is close by—from hotels to conference venues, restaurants, and cultural landmarks. The convenience of walking between locations means less stress for your attendees and more time to focus on the event itself.

Newcastle is also incredibly well-connected by rail making it an eco-friendly and efficient choice for your event. Opting for a scenic, low-emission train ride over flying not only reduces your event’s carbon footprint but also adds to the overall experience.

  • London to Newcastle – Just under 3 hours

  • Edinburgh to Newcastle – 1.5 hours

  • Birmingham to Newcastle – 2 hours 47 minutes

  • Leeds to Newcastle – 1 hour 30 minutes

BONUS:

  • Did you know that Newcastle has its own airport? Newcastle International Airport connects directly to major European cities, including Amsterdam, Paris, and Frankfurt, offering easy access for international attendees.

Unforgettable Team Experiences & Local Culture

Newcastle isn’t just about the event itself—there’s so much more the city has to offer. One of the highlights? Stottie Making—an interactive activity where participants get to bake the famous local bread while supporting a community-driven charity. It’s not just fun; it’s meaningful and gives your guests a hands-on, heartwarming experience that they’ll remember long after the event ends.

For evening entertainment, the ABOVE Rooftop Bar offers panoramic views of the city skyline, making it an ideal spot for pre-dinner drinks. Afterward, head to SIX Rooftop @ Baltic for a memorable dining experience overlooking the River Tyne. With tasting menus that span six or nine courses, it’s the kind of elevated experience that’ll make your VIP guests feel extra special.

Hotels for Every Guest’s Needs

When it comes to accommodations, Newcastle has something for everyone—whether you're hosting CEOs who expect five-star luxury or a team on a tighter budget. Here’s a quick breakdown of some great options:

  • 🏨 Dakota Newcastle – Sleek and stylish, perfect for executives looking for top-tier service and amenities.

  • 🏨 Hilton Newcastle Gateshead – A trusted name with fantastic river views and great event facilities.

  • 🏨 Crowne Plaza Newcastle – Ideal for business travelers, with excellent conference and meeting facilities.

  • 🏨 Boutique & Family-Run Hotels – If you want personalized service and a unique, tailored experience, there are plenty of charming options to choose from.

No matter the size or needs of your group, Newcastle’s range of accommodations makes it easy to find the perfect fit for your event.

Is Newcastle Your Next Event Destination?

When I first visited Newcastle, I wasn’t sure what to expect. But by the time I left, I was convinced—it’s a hidden gem for corporate events, NGO gatherings, and everything in between.

The city’s blend of history, modern venues, walkability, and commitment to sustainability makes it an excellent choice for any event.

A big thank you to the amazing team at Newcastle Gateshead Initiative for organizing such a fantastic trip! And here’s a picture of the lovely group I was part of during this experience.
